| AI isn't raising your kids. You are. The machine is just a tool in the room. |
Here's a number that should stop you mid-scroll. Nearly three in four teenagers have already used an AI companion, a chatbot built to act like a friend, and about a third of them have picked that bot over a real person for a serious conversation.
Read that again. Not homework. Not a quick fact. A serious conversation. The kind you'd hope they would bring to you.
That's the part most “AI and kids” articles quietly skip. They argue about whether AI helps with schoolwork. The bigger shift is more personal: AI is slipping into the space where thinking, and sometimes feeling, used to happen. Whether that turns out well or badly for your kid comes down to one variable no app controls.
You.
This isn't a pros-and-cons list that ends with “so supervise your child.” By the end you'll have a simple test you can apply to any AI moment, and a three-move playbook that fits on an index card. First, some perspective.
And let's be clear that this is not a someday problem. The share of US teens using ChatGPT for schoolwork doubled to 26% in a single year, and roughly three in ten now use an AI chatbot every day. Whatever you decide, you're deciding about something that's already in your kid's hands.
We've actually been here before
Every generation gets a technology that supposedly ruins its children. Writing was one of them. In Plato's Phaedrus, Socrates worried that writing would “implant forgetfulness” and that people would stop exercising memory. He wasn't entirely wrong, but writing worked out fine.
Calculators were the next villain. Then something inconvenient happened: when researchers looked at the 1996 national math data, the fourth-graders whose teachers used calculators regularly scored the highest, and the no-calculator classrooms scored lowest. The skill that mattered wasn't avoiding the tool. It was knowing when and how to use it.
Google got the same treatment in 2008 with the famous “is this making us stupid?” panic. Pew later surveyed a wall of experts and the consensus was calmer: we didn't get dumber, we just changed what we memorise. We remember where to find things instead of the things themselves.
Notice the pattern. Each time, the panic pointed at children, and each time the tool turned out to be fine once adults taught judgment about it. The danger was never the calculator. It was unsupervised, unmodeled use. Hold onto that, because AI is the same story with higher stakes.
How AI can genuinely help your kids grow
Let's be fair to the technology, because the upside is real and specific, not just marketing.
Start with tutoring. A one-on-one tutor has always been the gold standard, and it's always been expensive. AI closes some of that gap. Khan Academy's own efficacy study of roughly 350,000 students found that kids using the platform 30 minutes a week saw about 20% greater-than-expected learning gains. A patient, always-available explainer that never sighs at the fourth “but why?” is a real gift to a curious kid.
Then there's accessibility, which is where AI does some of its most quietly life-changing work. For children with dyslexia, ADHD, or autism, AI-driven text-to-speech, reading support, and focus scaffolding have shown large measured improvements in reading and comprehension. A kid who used to dread reading aloud can suddenly keep pace. That's not a productivity hack. That's dignity.
Here's a less obvious one. AI is judgment-free, and for shy kids that changes everything. In one study, roughly three out of four students said an AI tool made them less afraid to ask questions they'd never raise in front of the class. The anxious kid, the English-language learner, the one who hates looking slow, they all get a private door into curiosity. There's even an upside hiding in AI's flaws. When kids catch a chatbot being confidently wrong, they learn something a textbook can't teach: that a smart-sounding answer isn't automatically a true one. Researchers have watched children turn an AI's mistakes into lessons in skepticism, spotting when the machine is just guessing. Handled well, a wrong answer is a critical-thinking exercise in disguise.
So yes, AI can help your kids grow. But the same tool, used a slightly different way, does the opposite. That's the whole game.
The drawbacks nobody puts on the brochure
The brochure risks are the boring ones: screen time, privacy, the odd wrong answer. Those are real, but they're not the ones that keep me up.
The first real risk is cognitive offloading, a fancy term for letting the machine do your thinking. A 2025 study of 666 people found a clear link between heavy AI use and weaker critical-thinking scores, and the effect was strongest in the youngest group. Younger brains are exactly the ones still building the muscle.
An MIT Media Lab team put numbers on why. They had people write essays with and without ChatGPT while wearing EEG caps. The AI group showed the weakest brain engagement, and here's the detail that sticks: many of them couldn't quote a single sentence from the essay they'd just “written” minutes earlier. The researchers called it “cognitive debt.” (Worth noting it was a small study of adults, not kids, so read it as a warning sign, not a verdict.) The lesson still lands: if the AI does the work, the brain skips the workout.
The second risk is sneakier because it feels good. AI tends to be a flatterer. Research in Science found that sycophantic AI, the kind that agrees with you and tells you what you want to hear, actually increases dependence and makes people more confident in shaky beliefs. For a child forming their sense of the world, an assistant that never pushes back is not a neutral thing.
The third is the one hiding behind the “homework helper” label: companionship. UK research found that 35% of kids who use AI chatbots say it feels like talking to a friend, and among more vulnerable children, one in four would rather talk to a bot than a person. Child-safety experts are blunt that AI companions aren't built for the emotional needs of minors. A chatbot designed to be endlessly agreeable is a poor substitute for a friend who occasionally tells you you're wrong.
So does AI make it or break it for your kids?
Here's the honest answer: the same tool does both, and usage is the switch.
The cleanest illustration comes from the University of Pennsylvania. Students using AI to study got 48% more practice problems right, then scored 17% worse on the concepts when the AI was taken away. Same tool. Opposite result. The difference was whether the kid was doing the thinking or watching the machine do it.
Which gives you a test you can apply to any AI moment. I call it the driver-versus-passenger test:
After the AI finishes, is my kid the driver or the passenger? Could they explain it, defend it, or redo it without the AI?
Driver use is when the AI proposes and the child evaluates, corrects, or builds on it. The kid still owns the thinking. “The AI's outline was wrong here, so I fixed it” is a driver. Passenger use is when the AI produces and the child copies. The “I can't quote my own essay” failure is a passenger.

You're the parent, not the AI. What does that actually mean?
This is where most articles wave vaguely at “boundaries” and move on. But there's a specific, uncomfortable truth underneath it.
Your kid's AI habits are going to look a lot like yours. The strongest predictor of a child's screen time turns out to be their parents' screen time, and young children learn behaviour mostly by copying the adults around them. If you reflexively reach for ChatGPT the second a question comes up at dinner, you are teaching a lesson, whether you meant to or not.
So the job isn't to police the tool. It's to model a relationship with it. Three moves:
Model. Let your kid see you use AI as a thinking partner, out loud. “Let's ask it, then check whether it's actually right.” You're showing them the tool has a place, and a leash.
Narrate. Say your skepticism out loud. “That sounds confident, but I'm not sure it's true, let's verify.” Kids copy the stance, not just the click. A parent who doubts the first answer raises a kid who doubts it too.
Gate. Keep one line non-negotiable: AI can't be the primary relationship. It can help with the essay. It doesn't get to be the person your kid talks to when something's wrong. What's actually age-appropriate?
Parents want a number, so here are the sensible guardrails experts land on.
Generative AI tools generally aren't recommended for children under 13, and when older kids do start, they should have some basic AI literacy, limited access, and clear expectations first. AI companions, the friend-style chatbots, are the strictest case: child-safety groups advise against them for minors, full stop.
And here's the finding that should shape your whole approach. When researchers compared parenting styles, active mediation worked and restrictive blocking basically didn't. Talking with your kid about what the AI got wrong builds the skill. Simply banning it builds nothing, except a kid who'll use it in secret. UNESCO's AI competency framework for students says the same thing in gentler words: AI should support a child's intellectual development, not replace it.
Your one-page family AI rule
If you take one thing from all of this, make it this small, stealable checklist.
- Run the test. After any AI use, ask: driver or passenger? Could they redo it alone?
- Model it. Use AI out loud, and check its answers where they can see you.
- Narrate the doubt. Never let the first answer be the final answer.
- Gate the relationship. AI helps with the work, not the worries. You're the person they come to.
- Talk, don't just block. A five-minute conversation about a wrong answer beats a locked app every time.
AI isn't going to raise your kids well or badly on its own. It's a tool in the room, and tools take after the hands that hold them. The teenagers picking a chatbot for their serious conversations aren't broken, and they aren't lost. They're just reaching for whoever seems most available. Make sure that's still you.
